Hyderabad: The Telangana government has decided to come up with the state-level academies in cricket, gymnastics, horse riding and other sports with the state-of-the-art facilities to give a fillip to the sports among the students of welfare schools.
According to official sources, Chilkur is being considered as one of the possible areas to set up some of the academies. The sources said along with it, efforts would also be made to create and improve sports facilities in social welfare residential schools.
The decision has been taken as several students from the social and tribal welfare schools have been winning state and national level events.
Speaking to The Hans India, a senior official from the department said, Laya, a student from the social welfare residential school, was awarded ‘FIDE Master’ by the German-based World Chess Federation, known as Federation Internationale des Echecs.
For the first time, the FIDE had conducted online competition to all those who could not afford to travel to different countries to play chess with teams coming from different nationalities.
She took part in the online competitions and was awarded 1727 official yellow rating in the competition. Similarly, two students from VII and VIII standards of the social welfare school of Manthani in Karimnagar district had bagged prizes in all India level competitions of under 12 and junior level competitions held at Hyderabad and Pune.
The sources said interest of students in different kinds of sports has been growing for last three years, both in terms of participation and their performance in zonal and state-level competitions, organised by the sports society of the Telangana State Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TWREIS).
Students from the welfare residential schools were also taking active part in the sports competitions organised by Sports Authority of India (SAI), Sports Authority of Telangana (SAT) and other associations and showing up their talent, he added.
It was against this backdrop that TSWREIS Secretary R S Praveen Kumar had mooted the proposal and it had received positive response from the state government. Following this, officials are preparing a detailed plan of action on how to encourage sports among the students of welfare residential schools.
Accordingly, the entire state with the erstwhile 10 districts has been divided into four zones. Adilabad and Karimnagar falls under Zone I, Warangal and Khammam under Zone II, Mahbubnagar, Ranga Reddy, Hyderabad and Nalgonda under Zone III and Nizamabad and Medak falls under Zone IV.
These facilities would be used to conduct zonal competitions every year and those who show best performance would take part in the state-level events, the sources added. “The society is already providing training in horse riding at Golconda Polo and Riding Academy, located in Moinabad.
But, a permanent facility would help in shaping national and international level players and it was the target with which the plans were being prepared, the official said.
