Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to widen 31 critical junctions across the city. The civic authorities have prepared long-term and short-term strategies in order to ease traffic congestion under urban junction improvement plan (UJIP).

Officials claimed that the road widening will affect about 700 properties at all 31 stretches. The officials said the consultants have already submitted the reports for which technical scrutiny for seven stretches is over, six stretches are at final scrutiny, eight stretches are under tender process, tender has been finalised for one stretch.

Tender process for three stretches is yet to begin. According to GHMC officials, with an aim to ease the traffic during peak hours at various across the city has decided to widen roads.

Road widening will be taken up with immediate effect at all junctions immediately and will be completed in one year. Officials claimed that they have also completed 50 per cent of the road widening process, which includes identification of land and properties in order acquire them.

The short plan will be completed in six months and long term road widening will be completed in one year. When queried about the same subject, a senior GHMC official told The Hans India that the civic body has hired three consultants in order to study the road improvement plan.

He said the corporation has hired the Third Rock Consultants Private Ltd to study road improvement plan at Suchitra and IDPL junctions, the LEA Associates South Asia Pvt Ltd to study road widening plan at City College Junction and the UMTC Ltd to study road widening at 28 junctions, including Himmathpura (Shah Ali Banda), Ashok Nagar, Cyber City, Paradise, Puranapool, Nizam College, Kavadiguda, Fever Hospital, Ali Cafe, Madina, Karmanghat and others.

The officials said the GHMC will widen roads to 100 metres on both sides. He said the civic body will first improve Suchitra, IDPL and City College Junctions (included in short-term plan) where land is available and requires no property acquisition will be needed. He said that civic body will simultaneously improve all junctions. He said that the stretches in short term will be completed in six months and long term in one year as they require property and land acquisition.

He also said that the civic body has instructed the town planning department to acquire both land and properties and handover to them at the earliest. He said that the price will vary from stretch to stretch and will be finalised in a week.
