Civic body takes up massive anti-larval operation; presses 2,375 staff members into service

​Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has taken up mosquito control activities for prevention and control of dengue, malaria and other diseases during monsoon.

As many as 2,375 staff members of the GHMC have been pressed into service for anti-larval operation.Weekly anti-larval operations are being taken up with 650 teams as per the Pin Point Programme (PPP) in domestic andperidomestic mosquito breeding sources (house to house).Every day around 1.20 to 1.30 lakh houses had been checked, the sources said.

On an average, 3,000 to 3,500 houses are being identified positive for mosquito breeding. All the positive sources identified in the houses are being removed and treated with larvicides. Checking of overhead tanks, sumps and other water storage containers are being taken up on regular basis for identification and removal of Aedes and Anopheles mosquitoes.

Day-to-day fogging is being done for controlling of adult mosquitoes with 150 portable and 10 vehicle mounted fogging machines, covering, on an average, 150 localities per day. Indoor pyrethrum space spray and larval survey and fogging activities are being takenup for all the reported cases of dengue and malaria for arresting further transmission.

The workers are sensitising Town Lever Federation (TLF), Slum Lever Federation (SLF) women groups and resident welfare associations. Health camps and special drive programmes are been taken up in localities.

The GHMC has directed some precautions and prevention measures which has to be taken up by the public such as every household should observe weeklydry day, empty and clean all water storage containers to prevent dengue mosquito growth, cover of septic tank vent pipes with mesh, avoid water stagnation on the roofs, precautions to be taken from mosquito bites in working places and schools, offices, factories, godownsand business establishments should observe weekly dry day compulsorily.
