Hyderabad: The main objective of police officers should be to unite quarreling couples and not to break their marriage, said RachakondaCommissioner of Police, Mahesh M Bhagwat.

Addressing a gathering of Sub-inspectors of Police posted within the RachakondaCommissionerateat an orientation programme on gender sensitization here on Monday, he said the police officers handling family disputes should focus on preventing the disintegration of families.

The orientation programme was organised by the Rachakonda police in partnership with BhumikaWomen Collective.

The police chief advised the police officers to be polite with people in general and women in particular and to protect the women and children from harassment and torture.

He explained to them about the amendments made to the Indian Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code. He also asked the police officials to register the complaints made by women in marital offences in the General Diary without fail and then call the family members of the victims for counseling at Bhumika Collective or Ankuram Counseling centres to settle the issues amicably. He asked them to take appropriate action as per law if the issues were not settled through counseling.

The Police Commissioner told the police officials to take steps and ensure that statements of the victims in child sexual offenses were recorded by women police officers and the victim were escorted with women police personnel while sending them for medical check-up.

He said that Rachakonda police were running two counseling centres – one at SaroornagarPolice Station and another at Kushaiguda Police Station.
