Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to follow the footsteps of Irrigation Department by adopting a programme similar to Mission Kakatiya.

The civic body plans to desilt as many as 19 city lakes with an estimated cost of Rs 310.60 crore. Besides this, the civic body has also decided to develop city lakes into tourist spots. They will have walking tracks and other facilities.

The State Government has already prepared proposals and sent to Centre for funds. The civic body has prepared proposals to develop Faaksagar Lake in Ameerpet with Rs 66.49 crore, Amber Lake with Rs 25.28 crore, Pedda Cheruvu with Rs 25.17 crore, Mysamma Cheruvu with 25.17 crore Gopi Chervu with Rs 16 crore, Rangadhamini Kunta with Rs 13.58 crore, Nallagandla Cheruvu with Rs 12.34 crore, Patel Cheruvu in Madinaguda with Rs 9.64 crore, Vennala Cheruvu in Jeedimetla with Rs 9.51 crore, Nalla Cheruvu with Rs 5.77 crore, Yellamma Cheruvu with Rs 5.77 crore besides others, all with a total cost of Rs 310.60 crore.

A senior GHMC official told The Hans India that the civic body had already prepared proposals and has sent to the Centre. He said that the proposals were finalised by Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K Taraka Rama Rao.

The civic body, after desilting the lakes, will also construct separate sewer lines to avoid contamination of lakes. He said that the GHMC will develop 19 lakes during phase I.

The GHMC officials further said that the lakes development programme will have bund strengthening, children park, walking tracks and recreation centres. Apart from this, the GHMC, along with Tourism Department, has also decided to provide boating facilities to encourage city tourism.

The official further said that about 70 per cent of the project will be funded by the Centre and remaining will be borne by the State Government.
