Hyderabad: Telangana BJP president K Laxman on Sunday urged the Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar to increase the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBV) in the State from 391 to 585.

The BJP president and other leaders gave a memorandum to the Union Minister for sanctioning more KGBV institutions.
In the representation, the BJP leader has stated that KGBVs had become a boon for the girls with rural background. The schools have been maintaining good standards. The students of these schools are competing at national level and are getting seats even in prestigious institutions like IIT, IIIT, NIT, IIMs etc, he said.

“As Telangana State has more tribal population, more number of KGBV schools are needed and they have to be established in all mandals to promote ‘Beti Bachao- Beti Padhao’ programme,” Laxman said. He said that to encourage and provide quality education for poor girl students, the Centre had established Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas in every block/taluk across the country.

He said that there are 391 KGBVs in Telangana having student strength of 74,000. And there are 585 mandals/blocks in the State. In another memorandum, Laxman said that there are only 9 Navodaya schools in Telangana and wanted the number to be increased.

He said that the Telangana government had increased the districts to 31 from 10 and many districts do not have Navodaya schools. He urged the Minister to sanction Navodaya schools in all the new districts of the state.
