Hyderabad: Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University of Hyderabad (JNTUH) has decided to implement biometric attendance system for post graduate students in its constituent and affiliated colleges from August 12.

The biometric attendance system, which has been already implemented for the faculty, would be extended to PG students and later on it would be extended to undergraduate students also.

Affiliated and constituent colleges have been directed to procure enough equipment to implement the system by August 12. The attendance would be collected online from all the colleges offering PG course in Engineering. The JNTUH has issued a directive to all constituent and affiliated colleges to take necessary action in this regard.

All the principals have to procure sufficient number of biometric devices from the empanelled vendors and see that the machines are integrated to JNTUH Aadhaar Attendance Server on or before August 11.

According to officials, the government is firm in controlling the malpractices in attendance system and even the biometric attendance system has been implemented in government schools for teachers.

It has taken the decision as some teachers, faculty of the colleges and students have been bunking the schools and colleges and procuring attendance in wrong ways.

In Engineering colleges, it has been observed that the faculty has been duplicated. One lecturer is shown as the faculty member of various colleges, thus violating the rules of AICTE.

Students should have 75 per cent of attendance per year to get hall tickets. However, in collusion with teachers, they manage to get attendance certificates even if they do not have the required attendance.

With the introduction of biometric attendance system, it would not be possible to alter the attendance records as they would be connected to central servers through online network. Monitoring of attendance has also become important for the universities and for the government to implement the fee reimbursement scheme.
