Hyderabad: The State government has decided to introduce fish seed of Common Carpvariety, popularly known as‘BangaruTeega’ this year.

The Fisheries Department which proposes to distribute about Rs 70 crore worth of fish seed this year said the new variety would comprise about 30 percent of the fish seed that would be supplied to farmers. Apart from this species, Rohu, Katla and Mrugala will also be supplied.

According to officials, the advantage of BangaruTeega is that it has prolific breeding (47 percent high in production compared to other species) in ponds and is priced at higher rate than other varieties in the retail markets and is preferred more in the domestic market.

If the price of Rohu is Rs 120 per kg, the BangaruTeega would be Rs 130 per kg in markets. BangaruTeega has reproductive cycle of thrice in a year, when compared to Rohu. “While Rohu is mostly exported, the BangaruTeega remains in good demand in local markets,” according to senior officials of Fisheries Department.

The tender process for this year’s fish seed supply will be completed within a week. The government has asked the fishermen to restrain from releasing seeds voluntarily into any lake as part of disease control method and scientific reasons.

A total of 77 reservoirs, 4,647 lakes and 19,465 ponds under Gram Panchayats have been chosen for releasing fish seeds. Among the total 70 crore fish seeds, over 53 crore will be of 35 to 40 mm in size (including BangaruTeega), while the remaining 17 crore will be of bigger size (80 to 100 mm in size).

The latter are earmarked to be released in reservoirs and big tanks. For bringing in more transparency, it has been decided to weigh fish seeds prior to releasing in tanks of more than 5,000 hectares of water spread area.

During the previous year, 27.79 crore fish seed were supplied. However, delay in supply of fish seed in the previous year resulted in failure to achieve the desired result.

It may be recalled that State government had planned to generate revenue of Rs 500 crore mostly through exports, giving low priority to domestic consumption.

However, it has been decided to acknowledge the local demand by including BangaruTeega in the list of fish to be cultured in water bodies.
