Hyderabad: The Musi Riverfront Development Corporation (MRDC) is contemplating using Godavari river water, nine sewerage treatment plants (STPs) and four pumping station to make Musi flow with clean water. Besides this, MRDC will lay 68 kilometre conveying mains, seven interception and diversion units to divert dwell time factor in minutes per unit length. The MRDC will spend Rs 2,965.52 crore for the Musi River Front Development and Conservation project.

According to official data, the MRDC will spend Rs 687.42 crore for upper and lower reach of the river front development, which is in the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority's jurisdiction, Rs 977.05 crore for middle reach, which is in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits and Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board will spend Rs 1,301 crore in order to construct nine STPs and four pumping stations in order to draw water from Yellampally reservoir and leave it in Musi.

When queried about the same subject, highly-placed sources told The Hans India in order to purify the Musi the State government has decided to pump Godavari river water into Musi. Officials said that the Water Board will construct four pumping stations at four different location and release the water into Musi for 365 days after meeting the drinking water needs of the city.

They said the government is also chalking out plans to fill the proposed new reservoir at Devallamma Nagaram in Choutuppal mandal under Godavari basin first and release the excess water in to Musi. Officials said that the continuos flow of water will automatically purify the water and eventually it will be fit for drinking.

Besides this, officials also said that the Water Board will construct nine STPs at Attapur (which will treat 70 million litres of sewer a day), Miralam (6 MLD), Nagole (140 MLD), Hayathnagar (24 MLD), Nallacheruvu (80 MLD), Nagarm (29 MLD), Amberpet (142 MLD), Fathenagar (30 MLD) and Quthbullapur (IDPL 59 MLD).

Officials said that the MRDC will construct rubbers dams in order to purify the river. The project also includes berms, jogging tracks, cycling tracks, walkways, setting up of kiosks, foot over bridges, boating and green space across the stretch. "We are planning to construct several parks in the available 430 acres of the government land," said a senior engineer in HMDA.

"To protect the river from encroachments, the HMDA is planning to construct retaining walls and flood protection walls in specific areas. The authority is also planning to construct a rubber dam across the Musi besides developing roads on its banks," he added.

Meanwhile, MRDC will spend Rs 1,664.47 crore for 57.5 kilometre Musi (under river front development programme) and Rs 1,301.5 for 757 sq km of catchment area (under river conservation programme).
