KCR kits spur institutional deliveries
Exactly a month after the initiation of KCR Kit Scheme, the managements of private hospitals have started to feel the heat of the scheme with the pregnant women making a beeline to the State-run hospitals across the State.

Hyderabad: Exactly a month after the initiation of KCR Kit Scheme, the managements of private hospitals have started to feel the heat of the scheme with the pregnant women making a beeline to the State-run hospitals across the State.
The State-run hospitals witnessed a steep rise in institutional deliveries in June since the government launched KCR Kit Scheme on June 3, allocating Rs 605 crore in a bid to reduce the Infant Mortality Rate and Mother Mortality Rate by taking care of maternal nutrition, besides offering financial assistance to poor pregnant women.
Under the scheme, the government is providing mothers and their newborns with 16 items worth Rs 2,000, which include clothes, baby soaps, baby oil, mosquito nets, baby powder, toys, napkins, two saris, etc. This apart, the administration is also providing Rs 13,000 to mothers of girls and Rs 12,000 to mothers of boys directly to their bank accounts in four instalments.
Since the scheme was launched on June 3, a whopping 3.60 lakh pregnant women had enrolled their names with the authorities. Of which, 40,451 women had undergone antenatal checkup (ANC). So far, the government hospitals recorded close to 13,000 deliveries recorded.
As per the stats, over 39,000 pregnant women are due for delivery in July. “The overall trend suggests that the State has witnessed a rise in institutional deliveries ranging from 30 to 50 per cent,” Chief Secretary N P Singh said in a video conference with the District Collectors on Monday.
The District Medical and Health Officers of various districts, speaking to The Hans India, echoed similar opinion. They stated that since the launch of the KCR Kit Scheme, there has been gradual increase in the number of institutional deliveries.
Warangal Urban district DM&HO B Harish Raj said: “Compared to May, institutional deliveries went up by 34 per cent. In all, the three urban family welfare centres, 12 urban health centres and 11 primary health centres in the district recorded at least 200 more deliveries in last one month.” In tribal-dominated Jayashankar-Bhupalpally district, the number of ANCs increased to 502 in June compared to 390 in May, DM&HO A Appaiah said.
“The number of institutional deliveries was almost doubled in the district headquarters hospital in June,” Khammam DM&HO A Kondal Rao said. The number of deliveries in June was 450 against the May month’s 250, he said.
The managements of private hospitals have already started to feel the heat of the impact of the KCR Kit Scheme as they witnessed a significant drop in cases, he added. DM&HOs of Karimnagar and Warangal Rural A Rajesham and K Ashok Anand also confirmed that people now started to look towards the State-run hospitals.
