​Hyderabad: Traffic violations by vehicle users would be taken into account from August 1 for calculating the number of penalty points and the driving licence of the violator will be suspended for one year on accruing 12 penalty points.

Launching the penalty point system for traffic violators here on Tuesday, City Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy has said, ``The penalty point system is introduced for the first time in India to inculcate self-discipline among commuters with a view to transform city into a safe place for commuting.’’

The government has issued G O 26 making amendment to the Telangana Motor Vehicles Rules to introduce penalty points for traffic violators and thepolice will implement the orders from August 1, the City police chief said.

The licence of a driver will be suspended for one year if the cumulative tally of the penalty points accrued by the driver exceeds 12 points during the preceding 24 months. If the same driver accumulates 12 points for second time, the licence will be suspended for two years.

The license will be suspended for three years if the driver accrues 12 penalty points for third time, he said. The learner’s license will be cancelled if the driver accrues five penalty points during the validity of the learner’s licence, he said adding that three penalty points will be deducted if the violators attend defensive driving course offered by authorised training centres.

Later, Principal Secretary to government, Transport and Roads and Buildings, Sunil Sarma launched the integration of traffic e-Challan system with M-Wallet App to enable the commuters find out and pay e-Challans through the app.

The M-Wallet allows vehicle owners download digitalised documents related to their vehicles such as licence, registration certificate and permit; and the same are treated as original documents during checking or inspection by the transport officials or police.

Since the M-Wallet has already become popular with as many as 13 lakh people downloading 26 lakh digitalised documents related to their vehicles, police units of Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda have decided to integrate it with e-Challan system, Sunil Sarma said.

If any traffic violation is booked against any vehicle, SMS will automatically be generated and sent to the mobile number of the owner, and a notification will also be sent to the wallet. Further, vehicle owners can easily find through the app the status and complete history of challans. They can also pay the penalty through the app, he said.

The city police have also integrated its Hawk Eye App with M-Wallet app to reach more and more citizens for better service delivery.

On the occasion, Joint Commissioner of Police, traffic, Dr Ravinder, Joint Commissioners of Transport Department and Rachakonda police appealed to the people to make use of the mobile apps and follow traffic rules to ensure road safety.
