Hyderabad: Union Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi assured to increase Haj quota for Telangana next year, as the Centre would be coming up with new policy. He said that Haj aspirants will be able to visit Saudi Arabia by ships which would be much more affordable cutting the travel cost by half.

The Union Minister who attended the Haji’s Vaccination Camp for Haj 2017 at Haj House on Saturday said that the quota for State would be increased next year in the view of the growing demand. The quota would be comparatively higher as the Central government was coming up with new Haj policy.

While acknowledging several representations from Chief Minister and Deputy CM of the Telangana and also Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, he said that the new policy would bring in more benefits and services to those who would go on the holy pilgrimage. He explained the new policy will restart the travelling through ‘sea route’,

which was abolished in the year 1994. “These ships can accommodate at least 5,000 pilgrims and cost would be half the airfare. Earlier delivering their speeches, Deputy Chief Minister, Mohammad Mahmood Ali recalled various representations given to the Central government about increasing the quota.

While MIM MLA (Nampally), Jaffer Hussain Meraj who presided over the function pointed out that Telangana being one of the major hub for Haj aspirants was neglected while allocating quota. He said that while more than 20,000 aspirants applied this year, only 3,037 were selected.

Amongst them only 330 through draw of lots, while the remaining were reserved under various categories. “Thousands of elderly people are still waiting for their turn, as they cannot afford to pay charges demanded by private tour operators. Hence the Centre should increase the quota,” he asked.

Later, the Union Minister administered vaccination to some of the pilgrims. Earlier, he also distributed cash and sewing machines to beneficiaries of Shaadi Mubarak and Unemployed Women schemes.
