Hyderabad: Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao on Sunday attributed problems on the water and power front in the State to the apathy on the part of the previous Congress government.

Highlights:

  • Minister for Irrigation T Harish Rao ridicules TPCC President N Uttam Kumar Reddy for claiming that the Congress had sanctioned the Pulichintala hydel power project
  • He says the Pulichintala project is of no use for Telangana State and it in fact is contributing to provide water for third crop in AP

Addressing a media conference here at Telangana Bhavan, Harish Rao said because of the negligence of the Congress leaders, the Telangana had to spend thousands of crores of rupees.

He took exception to the TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy taking credit to the construction of Pulichintala project and the also the hydel power project. He said the Pulichintala project was not beneficial for Telangana State and served as a source of water for the third crop in a year for Andhra.

Because of this project, as many as 32 villages, including 14,000 acres of agriculture land in Telangana State, was submerged, he said.

“The Pulichintala power project was to have been started in 2006 at a cost of Rs 280 crore to generate 120 MW power, but because of the apathy of the Congress leaders, the State had to take a burden of Rs 1,000 crore. If the same project was completed before 2014, the expenditure would have been borne by the united AP government. The Congress had not done any good to Telangana State.”

said Harish Rao. Similarly, the Lower Jurala power plant was started way back, but because of poor quality works, the project went under water during floods. “We started the project again and we are now able to produce 240 MW of power, he said.

This had resulted in additional burden to the State to the tune of Rs 300 crore,” said Rao. He said that the Manuguru power plant was shifted to Rayalaseema by then Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

If the same plant was constructed in Manuguru, the price per unit would have been Rs 2.40, but because of Congress leaders’ negligence it had gone up to Rs 4.8 per unit.

The Minister said the TRS government had increased the power generation capacity by 6,000 MWs in three years, whereas the Congress government built up 6,000 MW capacity in 60 years.
