Chinturu: The Chinturu police in Andhra Pradesh on Thursday seized 20-kg ganja hidden at the lower part of the Chinturu night halt bus belonging to Kothagudem RTC bus depot (of Telangana State).

The incident is a clear indication of new ways being explored by the ganja smugglers. No one was arrested in connection with the incident.

The bus plies between Kothagudem and Sileru. The police say that they have stepped up vigil to apprehend ganja smugglers.

Ganja is cultivated in Agency areas of Odisha. It is brought to various towns and cities in Telugu States crossing the Sileru River. Finally, the narcotic is finding its way to cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmadabad and Mumbai.

Talking to The Hans India, Chinturu SI Durga Prasad said that 9,000 kg of ganja was seized and 60 were arrested during the past nine months. 20 two-wheelers, six lorries and 18 cars were seized so far.

Etapaka SI R Ravi Kumar said the police seized 1100 kg of ganja in the border village Chinturu during the past one year and two lorries, five cars and two two-wheelers were seized.

Cultivation of ganja is going on in Allurikota, Nagaguda, Jhendakoopi and adjoining areas in Agency areas of Odisha.

The police are apprehending innocent tribals while the smugglers are managing to evade arrest. In view of the increased Maoist activities in these areas, the excise police would not be able to pay special attention to the region.
