Hyderabad: The Gangaram Lake Restoration Foundation will organise the 5K run for reviving the Gangaram Pedda Cheruvu here on Sunday. This 5K run is an awareness program for the citizens to understand how collaboration with the government can lead to positive results and contribute towards betterment of the society.

Around 1,000 residents will be participating in it. The residents from neighbouring colonies, apartments and societies around Chandanagar of Serilingampally mandal in Rangareddy district will take part in the 5K run.

As part of the Gangaram Lake revival, steps like lake fencing, cleaning, beautification and constructing of a comfortable walking track around the lake would be taken up. This event should also encourage many people to demonstrate social responsibility in several ways.

The Gangaram Pedda Cheruvu (big lake) which is located at Chandanagar in the Serilingampally mandal is one of the largest lakes in the Nallagandla area which is now on the verge of extinction because the untreated sewage water is constantly flowing into it from the neighbouring colonies, resulting in the accumulation of toxic chemicals and dangerous bacteria.

The lake has become highly polluted resulting in the growth of water hyacinth, thereby spreading dengue and other major diseases. Lack of properly demarked boundaries is resulting in the encroachments on the lake.

The objective of the 5K run is to create awareness on lakes restoration and promote the concept of inter-connected communities in solving various environmental issues facing the society. The participants in the event will be receiving a GLARE T-Shirt and a medal, a complimentary breakfast, a BIB and a goody bag.
