Mahabubabad: Mahabubabad MLA Banoth Shankar Naik, who was arrested for his misbehaviour with Collector Preethi Meena, has been arrested and released on station bail on Thursday. It may be noted here that during the launch of Haritha Haram programme on Wednesday, the MLA allegedly touched the hand of Collector.

Following the incident, the Collector lodged a complaint with the higher authorities. Responding to the issue, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao besides directing the MLA to tender an unconditional to Preethi Meena, had also sent Tribal Minister A Chandulal to pacify the Collector.

Although the MLA tendered an apology, it is learnt that the Collector reportedly insisted on registering a case against him.

Against this backdrop, the police on Thursday filed a case under the Section 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his or her duty) and section 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC. The MLA was let off on personal bail.

According to Mahabubabad Superintendent of Police N Koti Reddy, Thorrur DSP Rajaratnam has been appointed as the investigating officer. The video footage and the photographs of the incident will be sent to the State Forensic Science Laboratory after which a charge-sheet will be filed against the MLA, it is learnt.

However, protests are galore demanding to book him under Nirbhaya Act. Several leaders objected granting of station bail to the MLA.

TDP leaders Seetakka and R Prakash Reddy expressed anguish at granting station bail. Speaking to The Hans India, Seetakka demanded that Shankar Naik be booked under Nirbhaya Act.

At Mahabubabad, several organisations such as Progressive Organisation of Women, Congress and Left parties have taken out rallies seeking stringent punishment to the MLA.
