Hyderabad: With high cost becoming a constraint, the TSRTC has shelved the proposal to acquire the electric buses, which are said to be a good option to cut down the fuel expenditure.

The officials say that the electric buses can be a good alternative to the diesel ones but are against acquiring them because of its high cost, which ranges between Rs 2.5 crore to Rs 3 crore.

According to a senior official in the Corporation, the idea behind the proposal to go for the electric buses was as part of the RTCs efforts to cut down the emission of pollution from the traditional diesel buses and also to cut down the consumption of the diesel. The electric bus manufacturing company which gave one bus to TSRTC to run on experimental basis has taken it back after one month of operation.

The Silicon rubber insulator manufacturer Goldstone Company had given the bus to the corporation and the bus was operated to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport route on a pilot basis during the month of May.

The official told Hans India that the cost of the bus was a constraint for the corporation. The Centre talked about compensating by giving subsidy but there is no clear response from the government of India,” said the official. There would not have been any issues if the bus was made available at a cost of Rs 1.10 crore, which is equal to the price of a regular Volvo bus but buying a vehicle which is double the cost of the existing A/c buses would be an additional burden, added the official.

The official said that government of India is yet to decide on subsidy component. The Corporation cannot afford to subsidise it. The Corporation has a fleet of over 10,500 buses of different types. The diesel variant gives a mileage of 5 to 5.5 km per litre. The average consumption of diesel in the Corporation is Rs 50,000 kilo litres every year. The electric bus can run up to 200 km once it is fully charged, according to the experts.

The operational expenditure on the traditional diesel buses is Rs 18 per km whereas for the electric buses it is Rs 9 per km, half the traditional ones.
