If all goes well on the expected lines, the government’s plan is to augment scampi farming in 50 reservoirs of the State. As of now to procure 1.5 crore scampi juveniles, the Fisheries Department has already invited tenders and learnt to have finalise them in a couple of days.

Speaking to The Hans India, Fisheries Department Deputy Director V Srinivas said: “Scampi juveniles (size 1.5 inch) produced in the hatcheries will be released in six reservoirs as part of pilot project. The harvesting time of scampi is about six months during which each prawn will gain a weight of nearly 50 grams.” What we get in the market is of export-reject quality or the variety known as Ganga royya (prawn), he said, stating that scampi variety is delicious.

Fisheries Department Khammam Assistant Director D Anjaneya Swamy said: “Wyra reservoir has been selected under the pilot project and will be a certain income generating source in addition to fish farming. It may be noted here that Palair Balancing Reservoir in Khammam, fed on Nagarjunasagar dam waters, had the potential to yield 70 tonnes of prawns in a fishing season.

As of now, majority of eateries in the State are offering Vannamei variety imported from AP and other local variety prawns recipes,” A Tirupathi Reddy, who runs a restaurant in Hanamkonda, said.
