Sangareddy: Central government’s scheme to extend connectivity to rural areas by laying overhead high-tension power lines from Nizamabad to Shankarpally has proved a bane to farmers.

According to an estimate, the erecting of overhead high-tension wires and towers between Nizamabad and Shankarpally has affected the livelihood of 4,000 farmers

The private contractors have erected power lines over the agriculture lands. According to an estimate, as many as 4,000 farmers are affected as the power lines are laid through their lands.

Farmers have been continuing their protest for one week as they lose their livelihood. The Telangana Joint Action Committee and Sarpanchulu Ikya Vedika have also been campaigning against erecting overhead power lines through the agriculture lands.

The farmers are demanding that the district administration first pay compensation even before conducting trial run to erect overhead power lines. The district administration’s advice to the farmers not to get close to the power lines and towers has in fact aggravated anxiety among the farmers.

On Wednesday, the villagers of Jukal under Kandi mandal obstructed the contractor of the Maheshwaram company and officials from carrying out the work and locked them up in the gram panchayat. The police intervened and freed them.
The 765-KV and 400-KV high tension power lines are being erected in Hathnura, Pulkal, Sangareddy and Kandi mandals inSangareddy district alone, affecting more than 1500 farmers.

The farmers alleged that they were being kept in dark as far as compensation is concerned even though the works are nearly completed. According to them, the district administration had promised compensation between Rs 2.45 lakh to Rs 4.50 lakh per the area lost under towers and Rs 60 per square metre for area coming under the power lines.

Andhole Krishna, State President, Sarpanchula Ikya Vedika, said the Revenue officials have been dilly-dallying to pay compensation TJAC Chairman Prof Kodandaram had held a meeting with affected farmers earlier this week and felt that the only way to tackle the issue was the legal way and assured the farmers that JAC would stand by them and help them in every possible way in their fight against such injustice.
