Hyderabad: One often receives a spam call or message during a busy day at work or in leisure time and India has been recently found to be the highest receiver of such spam calls by a survey conducted by Truecaller, a phone directory App, this year. The report mentions that on an average, an Indian receives about 23 calls a month.

Most of the calls are either from Telecom operators offering new services or financial services’ promotional call. ``It is a nuisance for a person with a busy day at work to get such pesky calls. I personally get 5 to 6 calls a day from customer care executives or it’ll be an automated call,” said Surekha, 27 year-old fashion designer.

India is followed by United States of America and Brazil with 20 spam calls a month. The report also mentioned that around 5.5 billion spam calls have been received by the Truecaller users since January 1 to May 31 this year.

To avoid such spammers, many mobile applications and special services like Do Not Disturb (DND) by telecom companies have been introduced. Though these Apps have helped the customers to an extent, they are unable to curb the issue completely.

When asked about the DND service, M Rakesh, an employee working for a private firm, said, ``Once I activate this service, I have to wait for at least 40 days for it to get activated. Despite waiting for so long, the DND does not cover all the spammers and I still receive promotional messages and calls.”

Supposedly, the leading telecom services have a target set for their employees to make the customer change their existing network with theirs and to achieve this, executives tirelessly pester the users. Chile, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and United Kingdom are few other countries that joined the list of top twenty countries that receive spam calls.
