Hyderabad: In its efforts to tackle the malnutrition in rural areas, the State government is planning to encourage Self Help Groups (SHGs) to open ‘Nutri-shops’.

According to sources in the Rural Development Department, the Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP) would be chalking out the plans to roll out the programme as part of the ‘Palle Velugu’ scheme.

Speaking to The Hans India, a senior official from the Rural Development Department said “The key component is to create local market with rural producers for rural consumers. The entrepreneurs would be the local households and they would be making nutrient rich snacks and sell them through the Nutri-Shops.”

Besides making investments in increasing the nutritional content of products such as milk, vegetables and poultry, the shops would sell nutrition rich snacks made from pulses and milk among other materials.

To make it success, SERP would take steps to create awareness among the poor households on consuming the nutrition rich products and their benefits. In turn, the efforts are meant to provide livelihood for the rural women as well as combating the malnutrition in the rural areas, he said.

The new move would add to the State government’s programme of management of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) in association with UNICEF to improve the quality of nutrition services.

The target group of the new move is mainly about five lakh poor households in the State, mainly from SC and ST communities. Apart from this, sanitation and health would also be focused as part of the project under Palle Velugu, the official added.
