Hyderabad: Speakers at the round-table organised on Wednesday on the detention system in the schools expressed their concern over the proposed introduction of detention system because it would hurt the interests of the students.

Leaders of Telangana Parents Association, Children Rights Committee and Students Federation of India criticised the Centre for proposing to introduce detention system by amending the Section 16 of Right to Education Act. Speakers included N Narayana, Achyutha Rao and K Ramesh.

The Centre claimed that the detention system would help improve falling of standards in education. The introduction of detention system would hurt the interests of students belonging to the Backward Sections. The system would be implemented only in government schools and not in private schools.

The government schools lacked infrastructure to ensure that the students in these schools attained high standards. The students of Backward Classes would not get much support and the detention system would lead to the students dropping out.

The government should implement the Right to Education Act effectively, and see that standards prescribed in the Act are maintained in government schools, special coaching should be given to the students who were lagging behind and government should take the responsibility for falling standards.
