Hyderabad: The administration is at present grappling with a new problem in the Old City which has low literacy rate. Increasing incidences of domestic violence is posing a new challenge to the administration. The rise in the number of cases of domestic violence is attributed to technology intruding into the family life. The Old City accounted for most of the 245 cases of domestic violence reported in the Hyderabad city since January this year.

The couple, after returning from work, are spending more time chatting on social networks like Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapps.

If wife is found busy on social network, husband seethes with anger, and vice versa. Hyderabad District Welfare Officer G K Sunanda said, “Most of the cases have been reported from the Old City. As many as 245 cases have been reported since January 2017. Most of the complainants are in the age group of 25-40.”

Women, Child Welfare, Social Councillor said, “When a victim comes to us, we give her shelter and medical facility if they are poor. Then we produce her before the court.”

Premela (name changed), 28, who filed a domestic violence case against her husband a week ago said, “I got married six months ago to an engineer, who had a start-up company, but later I realised that it was just a facade he had created to get married to me. For a month, my parents supported me financially.”

Shruti (name changed), 25, said, “My husband, who works as a software engineer, had an affair with a woman before our marriage and his infidelity continued even after our marriage. I found out about this after three months of our marriage through his colleague. Once I confronted him he started physically abusing me.”

“I met my husband on social media a year ago and he works at a pharmaceutical company in America. He came back to India once; we decided to get married but after the wedding, he left for the US promising that he’ll arrange a visa for me. But till now he never contacted me and neither could I,” said another victim, Navya, 23 (name changed).
