Software employee arrested over sending divorce notice for delivering baby girl

A software employee was arrested on Wednesday after he issued a divorce notice to his wife as she gave birth to a baby girl.

The man, Ramesh, working in Wipro got married to Swapna on May 12, 2015 and was given a dowry of Rs 25 lakh along with jewellery at the time of marriage.

Swapna joined a private firm after marriage, earning Rs 50,000 salary which she gave to her husband and in-laws. When Swapna became pregnanr in August 2015, the family took her to hospital for gender test. On coming to know it was a girl child, they asked her to abort it.

However, as Swapna refused, they harassed her and didn't provide her with any food. Due to physical torture, Swapna's pregnancy got aborted.

When Swapna became pregnant once again, they once again went for the gender test and found out it was a baby girl. The family again asked her to abort but Swapna went to her parents' place and delivered a baby girl in August 2016.

Upon returning to her in-laws place, she was tortured and threatened if she didn't return. Swapna came back and stayed with her parents for over 10 months.

Ramesh, meanwhile sent her divorce notice. Swapna has now lodged a complaint against her husband and in-laws under domestic violence.
