Hanamkonda: Libraries are the heart and soul of educational institutions which play a vital role in higher education, said Regional Joint Director (RJD), collegiate education Dr B Darjan. With Information Communication Technology (ICT), radical changes have taken place in Library and Information Science (LIS) with regard to access of information, which is abundantly available across the world on the internet, she added.

Darjan inaugurated the UGC sponsored national seminar on ‘Innovations in Teaching and Learning Practices in Higher Education: Role of Library and Information Science for Quality Enhancement’ at Kakatiya Government College in Hanamkonda on Saturday.

The seminar was organised in collaboration with Telangana State Library Association. Addressing the gathering at the seminar, she expressed concern over the decline of reading habits among students.

Orientation programmes should be conducted to create awareness among students about books and other study material available in print and electronic form, she said.

The RJD exhorted the library professionals to orient the students about information sources like digital libraries, which have become a latest trend now, in order to excel in their studies. She promised to resolve the problems of college libraries in the district.

The seminar was organised in three sessions where twenty papers were presented. The college principal V Vijaya Lakshmi, Prof N Laxman Rao, Prof S Sudershan Rao of Osmania University, Kakatiya University library faculty V Krishnama Charya, librarian P Shankaraiah, the seminar co-convener A Sanjeevaiah were also present.
