Hyderabad: The shifting and merger of government schools in the name of rationalisation has been put on hold by the State government in the face of stiff opposition from the teachers and student unions. The government has issued instructions to the District Collectors and District Education Officers in this regard.

Special Chief Secretary to Education Ranjeev Acharya issued instructions to the District Collectors and Education Officers, directing them not to proceed with merger and shifting of the schools on their own without taking the permission from the State government. They should send the list of the schools which have low strength of students to the Commissioner of School Education.

In the letter addressed to the District Collectors and DEOs, the Special Chief Secretary said that during the DEOs conference held on July 6, it was decided to identify the schools which had low strength of students.

The government directed the district-level officials to ensure that the students are inconvenienced. The DEOs were told to furnish the data to the Commissioner of School Education before taking a decision on merger and shifting of schools.

“However, it is observed that some of DEOs are already issuing orders on shifting of schools which is leading to unnecessary confusion in the matter and a wrong impression has been created that government is closing schools,” the Special Chief Secretary observed.

Therefore, all the District Collectors and the DEOs are requested to take necessary action regarding the furnishing of details of schools with very low strength to the Commissioner of School Education for further action.

In the past few weeks, in some districts, officials of the Education Department had started shifting some schools and merging them with the nearby schools. According to the officials, there are 460 schools with zero strength and 403 teachers are working in them.

The number of schools with less than 10 students is 1,285 and number of teachers working in them is 1,762. Schools with students’ strength between 11 and 20 are around 2,892 and 3,944 teachers are working in them. As many as 4,637 schools have a strength of less than 20 while they have 6,109
teachers.
