Hyderabad: A 3-day awareness programme on ‘Prevention of Drug Abuse’ sponsored by Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan and organised by Centre of Human Development, ASCI (Administrative Staff College of India) commenced on Wednesday. Being held at ASCI's College Park Campus in the City, the programme was attended by faculty of Government Degree Colleges and Government Polytechnic Colleges on the first day.

Police Commissioner, Rachakonda, Mahesh M Bhagwat, one of the guest speakers, called upon the authorities to form committees to deal with drug-related issues in their campus before it’s too late. "There is a need to form small committees in the colleges to keep a tab on the student community. The committee should monitor abnormal behaviour of students apart from their attendance and work in coordination with the police to tackle the menace," he said.

Bhagwat strongly felt the need of making attendance compulsory to keep students busy. He said that regularly checking of vendors and hawkers around the educational institutions and random check in hostels could prevent the menace. Faculty and wardens should also focus on reasons like sudden drop in their (students) academic performances, he added.

A Vani Prasad, Commissioner, Collegiate Education, in her key note address, called upon education sector to rise to the occasion by empowering the younger generation with right information about the ill effects of drugs.

The Guest of Honour Prof Altaf Hussain, Vice-Chancellor, Mahatma Gandhi University, also emphasised that the attendance should be keenly monitored.

Dr K S Ratnakar, Chairman, Global Medical Education & Research Centre, Rahul Luther, Executive Trustee at Hope Trust and Dr Purnima Nagaraja, Psychiatrist, Dhristhi Psychiatric Centre also spoke.
