Hyderabad: As a way to contain pollution and to promote fitness, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has embarked on a pioneering project in the country that envisages constructing a cycling track along the Outer Ring Road (ORR).

Initially, a 12-km stretch, running from Narsingi to Kollur, would be developed for accommodating a cycle track on a pilot basis. The six-metre-wide cycling tracks would come up on either side of the ORR stretch.

The cycling track from Narsingi to Kollur is intended to serve citizens residing in Financial District, Gachibowli, Shamshabad and other areas on the IT corridor. The project is aimed at bringing down pollution levels and to keep citizens fit and healthy.

Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K Taraka Rama Rao, at a recent review, asked HMDA officials to come up with a detailed project report. Following instructions from KTR, HMDA officials are now preparing cost estimates and the nitty-gritty of the project.

A senior HMDA official said that the cycling track on ORR would be developed using asphalt for ensuring a smooth surface. The department would also develop junctions and put up benches to facilitate resting by cyclists.

Upon approval from the State government, work on the pilot would be completed within six months. If the project is successful HMDA would construct cycling tracks on other stretches of ORR, including Patancheru.
