Hyderabad: Ground level staff working in city libraries are struggling to make ends meet with a menial salary of Rs 5,500. On February 19, 2016, the State government released GO No 14, according to which the salaries of watchmen, security guards, sweepers and other ground level staff working in city libraries was increased to Rs 12,000 but, due to official apathy the workers are yet to receive the hiked salary.
There are 48 persons working in libraries who are yet to receive an estimated amount of Rs 70,000 to Rs 80,000 in the form of arrears. Saraswathi, working as a sweeper in the city central library said, “I am working here since 1987 and when the government increased the salaries I was glad but, due to official apathy we are still receiving Rs 5,500.
When we ask the officials about the increase, they say we are not getting funds and once we receive funds we will increase your pay.” Parvathi, another worker in library said, “We are not receiving hiked salaries and the menial amount we receive is also given every alternative month. It is very difficult to manage our house with this amount.”
A city central library official said, “We are adjusting Rs 15 lakh sanctioned by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).” He said the library cess, which is over 5 per cent, is collected by the State government for the functioning of public libraries in the State. He said since a few years regular library staff is not receiving their grants.
