New Delhi: Nizamabad MP K Kavitha led a delegation of Nizamabad MLAs' to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Thursday to impress upon him the need for establishing a Turmeric Board in the State of Telangana.

Kavitha urged the Prime Minister to establish the Board to mitigate the sufferings of the farmers growing turmeric not only in Telangana State but also in 13 other States. There was no uniform seeds policy nor a marketing policy adopted by the Government to buy the product in the country despite repeated appeals in this regard, she pointed out.

Several Chief Ministers too had written letters to the Prime Minister seeking such a Board and everyone was agreeable to the proposal of establishing the Board in Nizamabad. Moreover, import of turmeric was harming the interests of local farmers, Kavitha pointed out to the Prime Minister.

Later, speaking to the media, Kavitha hoped that the Prime Minister would positively consider their demands. She bemoaned the lack of commitment on part of the Centre in establishing even a Spice Park.

When the State government identified 40 acres for the park and informed the Centre about the same, the latter reminded the government that the scheme was scrapped. The State government had earmarked Rs 30 crore for the spice park so far, she added.
