Centre urged to roll back GST on beedis

They warned that the centre would have to face the wrath of beedi workers if their demand was not met.

Nizamabad: Telangana Pragatiseela Beedi Workers’ Union at a district level meeting at Ambedkar Bhavan here on Saturday demanded that the Central government roll back GST imposed on beedi industry and pay Rs 5,000 as subsistence allowance to beedi workers. They warned that the centre would have to face the wrath of beedi workers if their demand was
not met.

The meeting called upon the beedi workers to launch a united struggle to save the beedi industry. The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of beedi workers, which organised the meeting, urged the Centre to protect the livelihood of lakhs of people engaged in the beedi industry.

Union State president Vanamala Krishna pointed out that the GST on Tambaku and Tendu leaves replaced the erstwhile Central Excise Tax.

The beedi workers now have to pay Rs 168 for 1,000 beedis towards GST instead of Rs 16 thatw as paid earlier as Central Excise tax. This would affect the sale of beedi and livelihood of the workers.

CITU district general secretary Ramesh Babu, Telugu Nadu Beedi workers’ Union State president Anasuya and others exhorted the workers to put up a united fight till the GST on beedis was totally withdrawn. Other trade union leaders M Venkat, Md Noor Jehan, K Narsimhulu Goud, Kurte Lingam, B Bhaskar and others also spoke.
