Go for clay Ganeshas, citizens urged
With a move to create awareness among people on the need to protect lakes and to develop immersion tanks, a rally was organised at People’s Plaza on Necklace Road in the city on Saturday.
Hyderabad: With a move to create awareness among people on the need to protect lakes and to develop immersion tanks, a rally was organised at People’s Plaza on Necklace Road in the city on Saturday.
Hundreds of youngsters from schools and colleges participated in the rally. The rally is aimed to suggest people to use eco-friendly clay idols of Ganesha this year. Certificates were given to the participants. The programme is also aimed to promote awareness on clay Ganesha idols and hail the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) efforts in arranging tanks for Ganesh immersion.
Speaking on the occasion Tejdeep Kaur, Addl. Director General of Police, who was instrumental in restoration of Ameenpur lake, and is assisting restoration of many other lakes in Gachibowli, addressed a large crowd explaining perils of plastics, Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols and many other entities in the lakes.
Being an environmental enthusiast, apart from being a poet and bird lover, and who had a major role in getting lakes included in Biodiversity parks, Tejdeep Kaur stressed on the importance of such awareness programmes.
One of the key organisers of the rally, Madhulika Chowdary from Dhruvansh, primarily associated with Neknampur lake, illustrated the importance of education among people towards environmental awareness. She conducted awareness sessions amongst various college students and branded them as warriors for lake protection. Dr Raghuvanshi Ram, Professor from NEERI explained how to tackle lakes from harmful effects of Plaster of Paris.
Farida Tampal, Director of WWF explained to audience about the importance of lake restoration and necessity to protect shrinking lakes. Having restored many lakes across India and in Hyderabad, Ms Farida explained her experiences gave valuable suggestions to protect environment and to prevent pollution in the lakes.
Krishna Kaza from GLARE & Connected Communities, presented the Lake Warriors band to Tejdeep Kaur and reiterated importance of clean lakes and hailed the GHMC and HMDA for arranging immersion ponds. Anuradha HOD MBA, and Sailaja, HOD, Biochemistry were instrumental in educating and motivating students on lake restoration topics and creating next generation of environmental enthusiasts.
Teachers along with Neeraj - chairman of Dhruvansh, Supriya from RARE, Srinivas Reddy from Vardhaman, and Narsimha Chary were instrumental in educating audience in batches on the importance of bio-degradable idol immersion. Many prominent NGOs like RARE, SAHE, VR4U, Red Cross and others attended along with officials from GHMC and HMDA. There was a large participation from environmental restoration supporters from Bank of America.
At the end of the event – over 500 people took a pledge to use clay Ganeshas and to protect lakes from harmful effects of POP and other non- biodegradable paints.
