Former MP Ponnam Prabhakar who took up an indefinite hunger strike demanding the establishment of a medical college at the Khammam district headquarters was taken into police custody on Tuesday morning.

He was shifted to Karimnagar Government Hospital. Following the deteroiration of his health condition, the doctors stated that the strike might effect his kidneys and heart if it continues.

Based on the doctor's statement, the government ordered the police to end the strike. Congress leaders, meanwhile staged a protest against the state government for stopping the strike and arrest Ponnam Prabhakar.

Speaking to the media, the former MP said that till the government agrees to the demand of a medical college, he will continue the hunger strike and will do so from the hospital.
