Narsapur: Scores of Congress party workers and leaders, including Medak district Congress in-charge Sunitha Laxma Reddy, were taken into preventive custody by police on Sunday, just before Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao was going to lay foundation stone for constructing 2BHK houses for 500 beneficiaries in Narsapur town.

In the wee hours of Sunday, police picked-up local Congress party leaders from their homes and arrested the rest as they proceeded towards the programme venue of the minister. The activists were sent to Manoharabad police station from where they were not released till 4 pm.

Police claim that the Congress party workers had planned to stall the event; therefore, the arrests were made. However, the Congress party’s objection to the current allotment of 2BHK houses to 500 beneficiaries goes back to 2013-2014, when 1370 beneficiaries were allotted 10 acres of land at the same location where the State government now wants to build 2BHK houses.

As per the requirements of the Housing Department, bushes and trees were cleared and just laying roads and preparing layouts were remained to be completed when Telangana statehood was announced. Then came elections and Congress government was ousted from power.

Even after the elections the party leaders along with the beneficiaries gave several representations to the present government for including those 1370 beneficiaries under 2bhk scheme. But there was no response from the government in this regard.

The issue has been pending since then and snowballed into a controversy. Recently, the District Administration announced cancellation of the previous allotments citing that the beneficiaries didn't meet the eligibility criteria for 2bhk scheme.

Led by Sunitha Reddy, Congress party workers and beneficiaries who turned non-beneficiaries all of a sudden; held dharnas last month, demanding inclusion of their names under 2bhk beneficiaries. The activities also threatened that they would occupy the land if their demands were not met.

"MLA Madan Reddy and ZPTC Chairperson Rajamani had assured us that there was enough space to build not just 500 but even 1000 houses. We didn't agitate further because they said they would accommodate everyone," recalled Sunitha Reddy, speaking to The Hans India on phone from Manoharabad police station.

Most recently the District Administration has identified 500 new beneficiaries and on Sunday the foundation stone laying event was for their houses.Congress party alleges that the 500 new beneficiaries were TRS party workers and none of the 1370 beneficiaries figured among them.
