Hyderabad: The High Court at Hyderabad, on Tuesday, directed the State Excise department to explain within a week, its competence and limitations in investigating the recent drugs case in response to the writ filed by the TDP MLA Revanth Reddy.

Revanth Reddy approached the Hyderabad High Court, seeking a direction that the drugs case be handed over to the CBI. He averred that the prohibition and excise department was not fully competent to investigate a case of this nature which had interstate and international ramifications. He requested the court to ensure that the Narcotics Control Bureau, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, and Enforcement Directorate were given the case.

Rachana Reddy, the counsel for Revanth Reddy pleaded that the investigation carried out by the SIT was not satisfactory. She added that the Excise department can not prosecute the persons involved though it has the authority of controlling the drug menace.

The government pleader Sarath informed the Court that the department has got all the powers to probe the case as per the NDPS act, 1985.

The Court after listening to both the versions, asked the Excise department to submit a detailed report within a week explaining its powers and limitations in probing the case. The Court posted the case to the next Tuesday.
