Hyderabad: Telangana BJP president K Laxman on Monday has alleged that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has been misleading the people on GST with fictitious figures.

Addressing a press conference here, Laxman said that the Chief Minister was speaking as if GST was only implemented in Telangana and the Centre was targeting the State. He said before implementing GST, the Centre had taken up discussion with finance ministers of all the States and the intellectuals in the country;

and after detailed discussions the slab rate of 28 per cent was decreased to 18 per cent on some items; and some goods were removed from the purview of GST. Laxman said the Chief Minister had openly welcomed the GST and also claimed that because of his government’s efforts slab rates were decreased on many items.

Laxman said that the argument made by the government that there would be a burden of Rs 19,000 crore on the State government on the irrigation projects taken up by it was totally false. He said that it was totally false to state that it would require Rs 2.30 lakh crore for taking up projects like Mission Bhagiratha, Mission Kakatiya, double bedroom houses, roads etc.

The Chief Minister should explain how it would cost Rs 2.30 lakh crore. “It is nothing but misleading the people to say that there would be a burden of Rs 19,000 crore,” said Laxman.

He said that the tax on cement and steel have been decreased by 10 per cent under GST. The government should raise the issues at the GST Council meetings. The next meeting is slated to be held in September and the issue can be discussed there. It is not proper for a Chief Minister to put the blame on the Centre, the BJP leader said.
