Vemulawada: Terming Nerella incident as unfortunate, MA&UD Minister KT Rama Rao has accused the Opposition parties, especially Congress, of giving political colour to a law and order issue. It may be noted here that eight persons were arrested for reportedly torching four sand-laden trucks in Nerella on July 2. The arrest turned out into a controversy after it came to light that the detainees were allegedly tortured.

Speaking to the media persons here on Tuesday, KT Rama Rao, who met the victims in a private hospital, has blamed the Congress for fuelling the issue. The incident which happened in a fit of anger was blown out of the proportion due to the vested interests of the Opposition.

“The Congress is unable to digest the development in the district, especially with the Mid Manair Dam is nearing completion, hence it wanted an issue to blame the TRS government,” KTR said, accusing the Opposition of trying to give a political colour to the issue. They wanted to project the TRS government as anti-Dalit, he added.

The TRS government has earned more than Rs 1,000 crore through sand quarrying in last three years, this is something that the Congress never achieved in its entire 45-year rule in the State, he said. Against this fact, how Congress would say that sand mafia is rampant in the State, he questioned.

“I spoke to victims and all that they complained was who gave the police the power to torture them. Their query is legitimate. The government will take action against the police if the allegation is proved by the ongoing DIG-level probe,” KTR said. With a plan to store water in the Mid Manair Dam within a month, sand quarrying activity is hectic in the region, he said, brushing aside the allegations of Opposition parties.

He termed the Opposition leaders as tourists who come and go to exploit political mileage. Further he said that Congress’ act is to create a void between him and his constituency people. He assured the victims of better treatment in Hyderabad if required.

Vemulawada MLA Chennamaneni Ramesh Babu, TESCOB chairman Konduri Ravinder Rao and Manthani MLA Putta Madhu were among others present.
