Hyderabad: The Telangana State government's flagship double bedroom housing project for the urban has turned out to be a major burden to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). The government earlier has asked the civic body to bear Rs 1.5 lakh infrastructure cost (per unit). It is now asking them to purchase the land to take up the 2BHK housing project. Officials claimed that if the government continues with same policy, the corporation will soon become bankrupt.

According to GHMC officials, the government on 29th June 2017 has asked the civic body to bear the Rs 1.5 lakh infrastructure cost per each unit. The government has now instructed the civic body to purchase about 80 acres of assigned land at Kollur village to take up the 2BHK project. The estimated cost for the project is Rs 33 crore where about 20,000 units of 2BHK houses will be constructed.

When asked about the issue, a senior GHMC official told The Hans India that the civic body will now purchase the 80 acres assigned land in the Kollur village with an estimated cost of Rs 33 crore. He said that the infrastructure cost itself would burden the civic body with Rs 1,500 crore. He said if the government asks to purchase land, the GHMC will be not in a position to provide basic civic amenities and pay its salaries to employees in near future.

The GHMC official further said out of total 650 acres required, the civic body has identified about 480 acres of land to take up the 2BHK housing project. He said the government has already asked it to purchase 80 acres from GHMC's account but further such instructions to purchase land will bankrupt the civic body.

Meanwhile, the GHMC has acquired 52 acres of land in Hyderabad district, 150 acres in Rangareddy, about 250 acres in Medak and 40 acres of land in Sangareddy.
