Hyderabad: Transport Minister P Mahender Reddy on Wednesday directed the Transport Department officials to make Aadhaar mandatory for the sale, purchase, registration and transfer of ownership of vehicles.

The Minister gave these directions during a review meeting to discuss the issues pertaining to the transfer of ownership of the vehicle seized by the RTA and police. The Minister was informed that there were 95 lakh vehicles in the State and most of the owners were not following the regulations pertaining to second and third transfer of ownership, resulting in problems.

Mahender Reddy said that in case of accidents, the persons on whose name the vehicle was registered would be held liable and they would be deprived of the insurance benefits. He said the vehicle owners would be prompted to transfer the vehicle in their name.

It came to the notice of the Transport Department that the private financiers were harassing the auto-rickshaw, lorry and other vehicle owners. The private financiers have been selling away the vehicles without effecting the transfer the vehicle in the name of buyers.

The department was facing difficulties in imposing penalty points because of these issues and there was a need to bring changes to avoid such issues. The Minister asked the officials to take up camps to create awareness about the transfer of vehicles in the name of buyers. The Minister asked the officials to upload the details of sale of vehicles and phone numbers of sellers, etc. on the Transport Department website www.telanganatransport.gov.in.
