Hyderabad: The city is on the verge of facing acute water crises despite many assurances by the State government about adequate drinking water supply. With the water level at Nagarjuna Sagar Dam dropping lower than the Minimum Draw Down Level (MDDL) of 510 feet, the water board may not be able to sustain the supply without any further inflows.

Senior officials from Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) said the dredging works at the dam were expected to be a temporary solution for the supply face a delay of five more days.
The water supply level at Nagarjuna Sagar Dam has fallen lower than the MDDL to 500.4 feet.

To be able to continue the water supply, the Irrigation department had sent a request letter to the neighbouring State of Karnataka to release 15 Thousand Million Cubic (TMC) feet of water from Narayanpur reservoir on Tuesday.

It must be noted that the current annual demand for the drinking water in the city remains to be 16.1 TMC, most of which nowhas to come from the neighbouring State (Srisailam Dam). In the letter, Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao mentioned that without further inflows to the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, the department would barely be able to sustain the drinking water supply demand of twin cities.

Moreover, water dredging works at the Nagarjuna reservoir which were expected to restore the demand of 270 million of gallons per day (MGD) for the five months are facing a delay of five months. The project which began during the end of July was expected to be completed by August 10 but, according to a senior official from the water board, the project is now expected to be completed by August 15.

Regarding the request of 15 TMC water release from Karnataka, water board official said the request had received a positive response. The official said Karnataka Irrigation Minister M B Patil has assured to forward the requisition to the Krishna BhagyaJala Nigam Managing Director for further action. However, the water once released from the State of Kartanaka will be received at Srisailam and then further released to Telangana which may take a long time before the city hits acute shortage.
