Hyderabad: The Transport Department is considering making mobile phone mandatory for vehicle registration. It is intended to enable the officials to seal the registration of vehicles through ‘one-time password.’

The Transport Department officials have been insisting that vehicle owners write down their mobile numbers in the applications for registration. But there is no follow-up action by the authorities to check whether the mobile numbers given in the applications are genuine.

There is a suspicion that brokers and corrupt officials have taken advantage of the practice to grant registration to multiple number of vehicles on the same mobile numbers. The nexus between brokers and a section of officials came to light in a crime case where a person from Rajasthan landed in Hyderabad to lodge a complaint of repeatedly receiving messages pertaining to traffic violations.

A businessman from Kota in Rajasthan got hundreds of messages about traffic violations from the RTA offices in Hyderabad. Hitesh (name changed), the businessman, first ignored the messages thinking it was a technical glitch, but to his shock he was later bombarded with 600 messages a day including intimating him about the charge sheet in court.

Upon receiving the complaint, the police officials in the city approached the RTA authorities and found out that the transport authorities issued registration certificates to 5,000 vehicles on one mobile number. Official sources said many vehicles including bikes, cars, lorries, vans were registered with that mobile number.

In order to avoid such embarrassment, the officials decided to check the authenticity of the mobile subscriber hereafter. Joint Transport Commissioner T Raghunath told The Hans India that the department would introduce the OTP system during the registration process of the vehicle.

He said the vehicle owners would be asked to give mobile number for registration process. After entering the mobile number, the system would ask for the one-time password, which would be sent to the mobile subscriber. Only after entering the OTP, the vehicle would be registered and a temporary registration number can be issued, said Raghunath.
