Secunderabad: The city police thwarted an attempt by Congress activists to take out a candle light vigil to protest the proposed Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) here on Monday evening.

The event planned on the eve of 70th Independence Day celebrations was organised by Cantonment Congress leader Manne Krishank and was supposed to be attended by senior Congress leader and former Minister Marri Shashidhar Reddy.

The agitating leaders said the SRDP plan was going to cause an adverse effect on the Martyrs’ Memorial at the Parade Grounds as the proposed skyway would pass through the area.

They alleged that the police manhandled them and threatened not to do any programmes at the venue. They also allegedly threatened to lodge cases against them protesting leaders and send to prison, according to a press release issued here on Monday.
