The fourth-edition of Hasan Memorial Lecture was organised on Tuesday at Lamakaan. As part of it, a panel discussion was organised on “Young India Do we need the radical youth movement for these new times?.”

The panellists include Shehla Rashid Shora, former vice-president of the JNU Students Union (JNUSU), Jignesh Mevani, young lawyer, who protested the brutal attack on Dalit youth in Una, Gujarat and Pratik Sinha, head at AltNews, who has been striving to eliminate fake news participated and shared their views about how youth should fight for their rights.

“We are living in a state of instability. In many issues, Muslims were targeted and called anti-nationals. Political leaders are using religion issues for their benefits. Today, the Indian youth have no job security. Political unity of youth will change the status of the country’s development,” said Shehla Rashid Shora.

Shehla added, even after 70 years of Independence, many children are begging on the streets due to the failure of development in our country. “It is very sad that many children died due to the shortage of oxygen at Gorakhpur hospital. The Central government is releasing more funds to save cows than to save children. Rohit Vemula incident was diverted as caste-based issue. The Demonetisation and GST (Goods and Services Tax) made people’s lives even worse.”

Shehla criticised the implementation of automation of Metro in Delhi. “Why the automation is not used in the manual scavenging? What would be the future of 3,300 Metro drivers of Delhi after automation and who will provide bread and butter for them? We don’t need the artificial intelligence if that harms lives of common people.”

Pratik Sinha is running the ‘Truth of Gujarat’ page, a site focused on news about the Gujarat carnage. “In 2014, Narendra Modi came to power and people voted BJP in the name of Gujarat Model. Today we are witnessing what is happening in the name of Gujarat Model. It is a false propaganda. In India, 70 percent of people are youth and will become voters in 2019 elections. It is really sad that most of the youth in the country are not interested in people’s movements,” he said.

He also said that he will register altnews.com to launch its Hindi edition. “Most of the fake news is generating in Hindi language and spreads all over India within short time. To remove the fake news, we are planning to launch our altnews.com in Hindi.” He also said that the BJP is trying to bring unity under the umbrella of Hinduism.

Jignesh Mevani shared, “In all the universities like JNU, Jadavpur University or Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), all the student movements are being suppressed. We need to link all these student’s movements under one platform.”
