Hyderabad: The Continental Hospitals doctors have successfully performed pediatric heart transplant surgery on a 12-year-old girl recently. Trisha Mandal, a student of 5th grade was suffering from symptoms such as breathlessness and inability to do day- to-day activities.

The team of doctors confirmed that she was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy with severe left ventricular dysfunction. This rare condition occurs in one or two cases among one lakh children. Since this condition is uncommon in children and also irreversible in some cases, Trisha’s only hope of survival was to undergo a heart transplant.

Speaking to the media Dr Sunil Kumar Swain, Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon said, ``With this cardiac condition, Trisha’s heart was unable to pump blood adequately to maintain the required circulation in the body. She subsequently also developed a clot in the heart.”

Since we found the matching donor organ early, we were able to avoid the risk of the clot getting dislodged and causing further neurological problems, ‘’ he said and added `Trisha has recovered well from the surgery and we are keeping her under close observation.’ Hailing from Adilabad, Trisha’s parents Vikas and Sandhya Mandal have come from a lower socio-economic background family and are daily wage earners.

Dr Anjul Dayal- Pediatric Intensivist said with the support of Health Minister Dr Laxma Reddy, Aarogyasri Trust approved her case for heart transplantation. The Continental Hospital Transplant Team swiftly moved into action and registered Trisha on the State organ donation programmme- Jeevandan.“

In the meantime, Jeevandan alerted the availability of a matching donor, a 14-year-old girl with similar body weight and heart size at Aware Global Hospitals, LB Nagar. The donor's heart was transported to Continental Hospitals through a specially activated green corridor covering a distance of 64.3 km in 1 hour,” he said.
