Hyderabad: Overnight downpour that continued into the morning and the slippery road conditions made worse by intermittent rains did not deter the enthusiasm of over 6,500 people from the twin cities as they kept their date at Hitex Exhibition Centre well before the 7 am starting time on Saturday.

The scene was a creative artiste’s delight as men, women, children, differently-abled people and some on wheelchairs made it to the venue in colourful attire. An element of exuberance was provided by youngsters whose gaudy costumes and hair-do seemed inspired by IPL and pop culture. Indeed, there was fun, frolic and, of course, a serious element of purposefulness, the reason for which they had converged at the place.

Mind you, the participants came from all walks of life - common man, the fitness freak, working woman, housewife, professionals from almost every field, industry captains, celebrities from across the spectrum and students.

Indeed, Airtel Hyderabad Marathon, which is powered by Hyderabad Runners Society (HRS), and is into its seventh edition, has become a popular draw in the calendar of the health-conscious Hyderabadi. And so it was with the Saturday turnout.

In keeping with its quest to popularise further, the main events, Full Marathon (42.195 km) and Half Marathon (21.095 km), are preceded with a shorter run, which is aptly called ‘5K Fun Run’. This curtain-raiser to the main event, slated for Sunday, is enjoyed by those keen on getting a feel of the joy of running.

It did not matter to any one as to who won or who failed to complete. The very participation was nirvana to this determined lot.

The best aspect is that the proceeds are meant for supporting myriad social causes.

It’s craze is fast catching up. For instance, senior journalist YV Vijay Kumar, who participated in the spectacle for the first time, feels rejuvenated after a fortnight long preparation. Now he has vowed to return for the 10K next time around.
That then is the magic of the professionally conducted Airtel Hyderabad Marathon, which can only get bigger and more attractive in the days ahead.
