BJP welcomes verdict of SC

Hyderabad: Welcoming the Supreme Court judgment scrapping triple talaq, the BJP president K Laxman on Tuesday said this would give a big relief to the Muslim women.

“We welcome the Supreme Court verdict on triple talaq. It’s historic and revolutionary. It is a step forward towards gender justice and gender equality. It’s a big day for Muslim women. Salute their courageousness, their fearlessness and even their ostracisation. They have stood for real reform and we must salute them and stand by them,” said Laxman.

Laxman alleged that Congress disempowered and discriminated women in general and Muslim women in particular during their six decades of misrule. Same is the case with communists. ``People will not forget Rajiv Gandhi government’s decision to dilute the Supreme Court judgment in the Shah Bano’s case,” said Laxman.

The BJP leader pointed out that the triple talaq was banned even in countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Turkey, Cyprus, Tunisia, Algeria, Iran, Sri Lanka, Jordan, Indonesia, UAE, Qatar, Sudan, Morocco, Egypt, Iraq, Brunei, and Malaysia.

Laxman said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP government have been sensitive to the concerns of Muslim women.

The Prime Minister in his Independence Day speech had raised the issue of plight of women due to regressive practice of triple talaq and now it has been held unconstitutional. The Supreme Court has upheld the stand taken by government of India that triple talaq is unconstitutional and discriminatory, he added.
