Hyderabad: Of nearly 4.55 lakh street light in its jurisdiction, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has replaced around 1 lakh LED lights in just 45 days.

According to GHMC Commissioner Dr. B. Janardhan Reddy, the GHMC has set a kind of record by replacing around 1 lakh LEDs lights in a span of one-and-a-half month. It took nearly one year for New Delhi Municipal Corporation to replace 2 lakh LEDs while the Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation installed about 1 lakh LEDs in one year. The GHMC proposes to replace remaining 3.55 lakh street lights with LEDs by the end of this year.

The GHMC is implementing the LED street lights project in coordination with Energy Efficiency Services Limited which is affiliated to Government of India.

With this one lakh new LEDs street lights, about 2.32 MU power is being saved every day with each unit costing around Rs. 7/-. The GHMC would be saving about Rs. 1.65 crores every day after it replaces all the LED streetlights. While it would save 20.73 MU of power, its power bill will get reduced by Rs. 14.72 crores.

The GHMC is replacing around 8,000 LED lights every day.
