State government’s decision not to increase superannuation age of faculty and expert doctors in medical colleges may be great loss to students

The move is intended to bring in new blood as part of the plan to streamline and strengthen the healthcare and medical education. But, the senior officials claim that the State government’s decision will result in disadvantage to medical education.

Speaking to The Hans India, a top official said, “Post bifurcation of the united Andhra Pradesh, both Telangana State and Andhra Pradesh are in the same league, facing acute shortage of senior professors and specialists in medical education as well as Medical and Health Department.”

However, Andhra Pradesh has increased the retirement age from 58 to 60 years for doctors and teaching faculty, and is likely to further increase the same to 65 years, in line with the Central government policy.

On the other hand, in Telangana State, senior faculty and experts who are retiring from different departments and institutions under the Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad (TVVP) are invited by the private medical colleges with open arms and they are offered high salaries.

Given the current scenario of shortage of senior and expert faculty, “if the private colleges continue their poaching of faculty of different specialisations and surgical departments, then, it would take years, for the government to make up the loss,” the official pointed out.
