Hyderabad: The State government is likely to veto the proposal made by the Excise Department for setting up retail liquor outlets in big malls and supermarkets. The Excise Department proposed to establish retail outlets in big malls and supermarkets in an effort to generate more revenue. The government is against the proposal because it may invite women’s wrath.

According to sources, the Excise Department had made the proposal at the request of the managements of the malls. The officials sent it for the consideration of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao. Similar proposals were also made last year.

Top officials of the Excise Department told The Hans India that the outlets in the malls would generate between Rs 300 crore and Rs 400 crore additional revenue a year. It also said that the new initiative would help to increase the sale of foreign liquor through the malls.

Trouble began when the Wine Dealers Associations opposed the proposal, saying that supermarkets are places where children and women and people of all age groups visit. Selling liquor there is not be appropriate. It will also affect the regular liquor trade, the Association represented to the government.

The Dealers Association D Venkateswara Rao demanded that the government reduce the licence fee if the permission was given for liquor outlets in supermarkets.

After considering the proposals and objections, the Chief Minister is said to have refused to accord permission for opening liquor outlets in supermarkets and malls. He is said to be of the opinion that such a move could lead to reaction from women and other sections as supermarkets cater to wide variety of requirements of the people which includes sale of puja materials.
