Hyderabad: Despite tall claims, the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) is yet to install proper water drainage system at several metro stretches across the city. Officials from HMRL claimed earlier last month that the water drainage connection works have already started in the lines where the tracks have been laid but, not much is observed by commuters and pedestrians who still find water dripping on them under the metro rail stations hours after rainfall.

While the completed metro lines still lack proper water draining system, the new lines are only adding up to the inconvenience. Officials from HMRL said drainage connections will only be possible once the tracks have been laid and works had already begun in areas where it is done.

For instance, the completed stretch from Nagole to Mettuguda still lacks a proper water draining system. Commuters on this stretch of road face inconvenience due to the water rushing down directly from the metro stations at various intervals.

Rajpal (36), a security guard working for a renowned hotel next to the newly constructed Hubsiguda metro station said the pace of the traffic remains slow hours after the rain stops as the water continues to fall off the station directly on the road.

“Water continues to fall off the station for hours which keeps the damaged road wet for a long time making it difficult for the commuters,” he said. People find the metro rail construction sites as their only shelter point during heavy rainfall. But, people complained that it hardly makes a difference as the water continues to fall on the people standing underneath the construction.

Krishna Kumar (28), a lecturer at an intermediate college in Tarnaka said the water continues to fall on pedestrians while crossing the metro rail station to reach the Bus stop even after the rain stops. “I have to escape the water dripping from the metro station more than the rainfall as I am not certain where it is coming from. Water draining system must be a basic priority as it causes inconvenience to regular pedestrians.”

With new lines being constructed at various points, the water draining directly on the city main roads from the metro rail construction and stations seems like an inconvenience the commuters will have to face for a long time. However, all attempts to contact the HMRL officials regarding this have proven in vein.
